I truly hope that this morning's plane crash was an accident, and am grateful that no-one I know lives anywhere near Rockaway. It looks like hundreds of people may have been killed -- another tragedy, more grief. I was just reading the NY Times magazine on the train, including a great piece by Colson Whitehead, in which he says that you officially become a New Yorker when you pass by a personal landmark and say, "Oh, that used to be a SoAndSo and now it's a Duane Reade." When your New York no longer corresponds to the extensional world's New York. In a way, 9.11 conferred official New Yorker status upon everyone, no matter how long they'd been here, because our New Yorks feature the World Trade Center and the extensional New York does not. |
